Chip Readers for Retailers on the Shore

As consumer cards expire, banks are replacing them with EMV cards, commonly known as chip cards.

Chip readers are now required on all gas pumps and ATMs.

EMV cards are far more difficult to counterfeit than swipe cards and their transactions are vastly more secure.

This protects retailers from losses incurred due to fraud, from fees not returned after refunds, chargebacks penalties, account suspensions and worse.

If you’re still using an outdated swipe terminal, now is the time to upgrade to EMV technology.

What is EMV?

EMV is a global standard payment method based on chip card technology. The abbreviation is short for “Europay, Mastercard and Visa”, the companies that collaborated to define the method.

EMV payments use chip cards that store their data on integrated circuits in addition to magnetic stripes. These cards must be physically inserted (or "dipped") into a reader.

EMV payments are many times more secure than swipe payments. The chips allow transaction information to be encrypted. This encryption is very difficult to forge, as scammers can’t simply encode stolen card numbers onto the magnetic stripe of a forged card.
